Automation & Augmentation are the second most important concepts following Neural networks & Transformers.
Human in the loop and Augmentation are often grouped together as “human + AI” workflows—but the roles they assign to humans are fundamentally different.
Why Human-in-the-Loop and Augmentation are not the same?
◼ In Human-in-the-Loop, the machine leads. It generates first, and the human steps in later to correct, approve, or filter. Think of hashtag#MTPE: the interaction is limited, and the human is mostly cleaning up after the machine.
◼ In Augmentation, the human leads. The machine is there to support, suggest, and respond. And they adapt to human’s workflow, rather than humans adjusting their habits to serve machines. This mindset creates a more dynamic, interactive process—one where human judgment and creativity stay at the center.
To me, this distinction matters. I’ve been advocating for human-at-the-heart beyond human-in-the-loop. Because the future of our industry depends not just on how much AI we use—but on how we design and reimagine our roles in a smarter way.
